9 ways to recover from (and avoid) holiday party embarrassment

9 ways to recover from (and avoid) holiday party embarrassment9 ways to recover from (and avoid) holiday party embarrassmentWeve all been therbeie, the holiday party that goes straight to Hades. Theres food, theres drink, (then some more drinks) theres the slow loosening of inhibitions and then suddenly Bam Someone says the wrong thing to someone else and its slo-mo career suicide in front of everyone theyve ever worked with. So, now what? Is it time to look for a new job while everyones so hungover they forget to blacklist you forever? In a word, no. In most situations, you can probably save both your pride and your gig.1. Youre not the only oneBelieve it or not, this happens more often than youd think so even if youve puked in your co-workers spare pair of shoes, chances are good youre neither the first nor brde to do so.2. Apologize. Then stop.Carolyn Thompson, Managing Principal of the Merito Group, a talent acquisition and consulting firm said, If you are the one that over-imbib es its up to you to apologize and inform those you may have affected that youre quite sorry and that it wont happen again. And then just drop it.If you keep talking about it the situation can take on a life on its own and affect your professional reputation, Thompson said.3. Apology acceptedIf you happen to be the one slighted or sloshed with red wine during the festivities, your best bet is to accept their apology and move on.It can be hard to take someone seriously in the office after youve witnessed that kind of behavior in a social setting, Thompson said. Politically savvy people wouldnt call someone out on it afterwards, but would graciously accept an apology from that person if they said they were a tad tipsy and to excuse anything that they said or did during that time.4. Leave earlyIf you sense that the merriment is about to go awry, make your excuses and just leave. You dont have to be sucked up into the drama either as a participant or witness.5. Turn a blind eyeNot always , but if you happen to catch your married anfhrer in a clinch with someone they shouldnt be snogging, its fine to pretend you havent seen a thing. If, however, youre worried they might try to get rid of you for possessing potentially awkward information, consult with your HR officer to let them know you saw something uncomfortable at the holiday party without naming names.6. Learn from past mistakesWhether youre the one who goofed the last time around, or the one who was mightily insulted, remember that an open bar at a work event isnt the place to slam dunk cocktails. Keep to two alcoholic beverages and drink club soda or water in between them if you feel you need to carry a drink on your hand, Thompson said. Club soda with cranberry looks just like vodka soda with cranberry and the only one who knows the difference is you.7. Try to be supportiveIf possible, try to help a colleague whos screwed up in the past. Laura Handrick, an HR Analyst at Fitsmallbusiness.com, shared a story th at happened some years ago when her best friend, a recovered alcoholic with 10 years sobriety, backslid.During a holiday party that included bar hopping, Handricks friend started drinking and went from fun and silly, to loud and obnoxious so much so that a security guard had to physically remove her from one of the venues.Handrick said on the next work day her friend did the most gracious thing possible. She apologized, individually to each one of us who had been there. She apologized for insulting a co-worker. She apologized for embarrassing us as a group. She apologized for every detail of the evening, she said.Since it was a party and not a work event, Handrick said, There were no real repercussions from a work-standpoint, so her apology wasnt meant to get out of trouble. She owned up to her behavior, asked forgiveness of anyone she embarrassed and meant it. There was nothing more really to be done on her part.Whats most interesting though, is that Handrick and her colleagues a ll knew her friends struggle, felt her remorse and promised ourselves and her to be better friends and co-workers by not making alcohol so available. While it isnt your responsibility to keep a work friend from making a fool of themselves, theres nothing wrong with exercising compassion in trying to help them when possible. If anything, it shows your boss that you can be compassionate and take charge of complicated situations.8. Be a planner/Dont plan at allIf you hated the venue last year and felt that too many people had too much access to alcohol or dark alcoves, consider joining the planning committee and suggest neutral locations or lunchtime festivities. On the flipside, if you were heavily involved in the planning last year and got blamed when things went belly (or bottom) up last year, feel free to skip the planning part and show up only to the event.9. Have a strict no tagging rule and stick with itIn a world of selfies and social media, send out a request as rule with the invitation, informing guests that posting and tagging guests will be frowned upon. Use wording that makes it sound fun and friendly, so that everyone is free to enjoy - but delay posting. Upload a page of approved shots to a private social media page, so that everyone can share without oversharing. Or have a photo booth or photographer instead.

Tips for Employers About Alcohol at Company Events

Tips for Employers About Alcohol at Company EventsTips for Employers About Alcohol at Company EventsDo you provide alcohol beer, wine, or spirits, for employees to drink at work-related events? If so, youve probably spent time thinking about whether this is a good practice. You want your employees to enjoy their work-related events and parties, but you also want to keep your employees safe. Be Responsible You need to minimize the legal liability of your organization yet not let legal worries dictate your relationship with your employees. A holiday party is not the only event where an employee may face the question of decidingwhether to drink or not at business events employers plan all sorts of events that serve alcohol. The bottom line is making the decision about what and how much before arriving at the party. Whether your event is a company milestone or birthday, an employees retirement party, or a holiday event, use unterstellung tips to plan an alcohol safe event. Emphasi ze Company Culture Talk about your company culture with employees emphasizing that drinking to excess is unacceptable during company events. Include alcohol usage guidance in your company code of conduct. For instance, it should never be OK for employees and applicants to drink alcohol during a job interview. Drinking at lunch job interviews should also be discouraged. You need to assess the applicants fit with your organization without the influence of alcohol. And, if youre considering drinking with a client or customer, drink only if the client is drinking, and the recommended limit in a client or customer meeting is one glass of wine or a beer. Dont Make Alcohol the Focus of Work Events Offer a variety of interesting, non-alcoholic beverages, to remove the emphasis from alcohol. And never make drinking, or eating, for that matter, the main focus of any event. Always make entertainment, speeches, presentations, company logo items to purchase with points earned, games, dancin g and/or activities for employees to participate in, the main focus of any company team building events. Consider serving just beer and wine, and no liquor. Avoid serving drinks such as fruit punch that limit an employees ability to assess how much alcohol they are drinking. Put Restrictions on How Much Is Available Limit the number of drinks the company provides by using drink tickets or another informal method of tracking the amount of alcohol served. If you want to limit alcohol consumption, consider stamping an employees hand in exchange for each drink you will want to limit the number of stamps an employee can receive. Limit the number of hours that the bar is open. Close the bar during dinner and at a reasonable time to signal the drawing to a close and ending of the event. You might also consider holding the event directly after work so employees party from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. for example. Use trained bartenders to serve alcohol never allow employees to serve coworkers or the mselves. Never provide a help-yourself beverage bar that includes alcohol. Make sure your bartenders are clear that they are not to serve alcohol to any person who appears to be inebriated. Bartenders must card these employees just as if they were attempting to order booze in a local tavern. Pay for the event, the food, non-alcoholic drinks, and entertainment, but provide a cash bar for employees. When employees have to purchase their own drinks, they drink less. Hold Alcohol-Free Work Events Nix alcohol except for beer and wine at company events that include children. For example, one company stopped serving liquor at work events that included families when several irresponsible employees started drinking shots in front of other employees children. It was the last straw. Provide a late night snack buffet before employees hit the road to end a company event. It doesnt have to be elaborate tacos, sloppy joes, hot dogs, popcorn, cold cuts, cheese and crackers, coffee, and soft dri nks provide a focus for employees other than alcoholic beverages. Prepare for (Some) Overindulgence Recruit your managers and event planning committee members, in advance, to keep their eyes open for employees who may be overindulging. Offer the employee a ride home, call a cab, or make certain that a designated non-drinking driver takes the wheel. Pay for cabs to sit outside your event in case an employee is advised or decides that he or she cannot drive safely. Or schedule the event at a location that offers easy access to public transportation. Be Sure Youre Covered Legally Take a look at your company insurances to determine whether you have the appropriate coverage that allows you to serve alcohol at company events You may also want to consider asking employees to review and sign a document that provides company alcoholic beverage guidelines, and that informs employees they are liable for their behavior at company-sponsored events. Make the document clear that employees can expect punishment for over-imbibing or poor interpersonal behavior up to and including employment termination. You can do this as employees RSVP for the work event. Alcohol can be a festive addition to a company event, but at company events, as in your workplace, employee safety is your top concern.

Dress Code for Interns

Dress Code for InternsDress Code for InternsWhen you accept an internship with a nonprofit organization or any other form of business, whether or bedrngnis you are paid or unpaid, you are not a volunteer. So dont think like one and more importantly dont dress like one. The determination, at least from a legal standpoint when it comes to internships, is not whether or not you are being paid money (though many interns are paid), it is determined by the relationship with the business. Under the law, interns are considered an at-risk employee of the company and need to dress and behave accordingly. In fact, if you are an employer considering offering internships, be sure to research the laws in your state because you may be required to pay the intern, collect/pay taxes on their behalf, and you may even be required to have workers compensation insurance in place throughout the duration of the internship. Represent the Companys leumund Just like all other employees, interns also repres ent the companys image in how they dress and present themselves in the business environment to other workers, clients, and customers. Showing up in sneakers and jeans sends a message to others that you are not serious about representing the company and are not there to contribute and learn in meaningful ways. Not Students on Loan Interns should not consider themselves students on loan and should adhere to the companys dress code. That is, the office (or other work) environment is not an extension of your college campus life.If you are not certain about the dress code, ask your boss or a human resources representative. If there is no formal dress code, look at the style of dress other men and women in the company wear to work each day. If everyone is wearing sandals, you probably can too. But if only one or two out of the remaining employees is casually dressed, go with what the majority is wearing.? Dont Try to Stand out by Bucking the System Some internships may lead to empl oyment with the company where you are interning. Do your job, and do it well, and be a model employee as if you already had the job.It is okay to make yourself stand out by doing a great job and going the extra mile for your employer, but dont try to stand out by simply being different. One of the biggest complaints from employees about interns stems from the way interns dress. Interns that wear casual or revealing clothing that might be fine on the college campus do not fit into the office environment. Remember, your position as an intern is not guaranteed. Even if you think you have an ironclad internship contract or arrangement, you may still be an at-will intern. You can be let go if you are failing to honor the terms of your internship or otherwise doing or not doing something that could be considered detrimental to the employer. Hair, Makeup, and Accessories Count, Too Proper business attire does not only involve articles of clothing but also encompasses shoes, jewelry, ma keup, and hairstyles. A well-known saying in the corporate world says it best Dont dress for the job you have, dress for the one you want. In other words, dont show up for your intern position in college attire- dress for the corporate world. Tips and Closing Thoughts Even if you are not interested in working for the company you are interning with you can use them as a job reference for future employment opportunities. The better you show that you understand how to function as a professional while interning, the better your reference will be when you are applying for your dream job later on.

Ensure Better Collaboration with Video Interviews - Spark Hire

Ensure Better Collaboration with Video Interviews - Spark HireAccording to the late Steve Jobs, You need to have a collaborative hiring process, and if youre hiring as a team (which you should be), seamless collaboration is key. Since hiring great people determines the success of an organization, getting more people involved and collaborating is important for coming to great hiring decisions.Video interviewing technology is modernizing traditional hiring processes by speeding up the process and improving internal collaboration. Video interviews enable informed decisions on new hires and reduce the risk of bad hires. After all, a bad hire can cost a company up to 30% of an individuals salary if the hire resigns or is dismissed shortly after joining an organization, according to the Department of Labor, so catching a potential bad hire early on in the process is a huge advantage for hiring professionals.Below, we will discuss how improving your organizations internal collaboration stra tegy with video interviews will ultimately streamline your hiring process and increase the likelihood of better decisions regarding new hires.Work as a team. When paper resumes pile up, time-strapped hiring managers can use video interviewing tools freely and collaborate at their convenience. Recruiters can now send over polished video interviews to hiring managers to view, comment, and rate candidates in no time. Hiring managers can then share video interviews with other departments within the company to evaluate culture fit and skill set. With video interviews, recruiters deliver the best candidates, and hiring managers can ensure their success within the company. This kind of teamwork makes for both happy recruiters and hiring managers(And remember, happy hiring managers make the world go round.)Get creative. Many recruiters and hiring managers are getting creative with their process by enhancing (sometimes even replacing) the phone screen with video interviews. Why is this? Becaus e with video, you gain additional insight before investing the time and effort of bringing them into the office (think nonverbal cues, personality, etc.)Recruiters and hiring managers can now evaluate things like facial expressions, mannerism, and other nonverbal cues that cannot be detected with phone screens. Video interviews are also a great way to avoid scheduling issues and the administrative work that goes along with scheduling phone screens or anfangsbuchstabe in-person interviews.Outline a seamless process.Outline each and every step of your process and deliver the strategy and goals to each member involved in the hiring process. If you are implementing video interviews at a particular time in your process, for example, just after the application review, make sure everyone on board knows exactly which steps are next. This way everyone involved knows exactly what to expect, and when you expect it. As your entire team works together toward a common goal youll experience the ef ficiency gains and youll never want to go back to the traditional way of doing things.See the same thing.Video interviews reduce the chances of unintentional bias and clutter during the hiring process. When there is an instance of a large number of candidates applying for open positions, it can be difficult for the interviewer to organize notes and communicate in an effective way with other decision makers. Many times, notes are lost, misinterpreted, or not even taken at all.Since video interviews are sharable, everyone in the hiring decision making process see and hear the exact same thing as the next person. When everyone is on the same page, hiring teams come to decisions faster and reduce the risk of losing a great hire due to hiring too slow.Encourage internal rating and commenting.leid every hiring team will have the time to review and discuss every single applicant. Upon reviewing the video interviews, allow each member of the decision making process to rate and comment on th e candidate interviews. This takes just minutes This also opens up a conversation regarding which candidates will move on to the next step of the hiring process. With video interviews, being more selective when choosing who comes into the office early reduces duplicate efforts and eliminates unnecessary follow-up with unqualified candidates.MeySen Academy uses a 5-star rating system to the point where any applicant who scores 3 stars or more on their video interview rating gets moved on to the next phase in their hiring process, which is the face-to-face interview in this particular example. This helps cut down administrative time allotted to scheduling interviews with will eliminate unqualified candidates early on, and helps foster hiring validation.Check out our free whitepaper titled Tips for Streamlining Your Hiring Process Maximizing Time With Video Interviewing to learn more about how video interviewing can ensure better collaboration and enhance your overall hiring process.s tellung gstockstudio/BigStock.com

Freelance Work in the Legal Industry

Freelance Work in the Legal IndustryFreelance Work in the Legal IndustryEmerging technology, budget-conscious clients, and new ways of doing business have opened the door for a whole new breed of legal professional in the millennium the freelancer or virtual worker. As legal professionals forge new ways of doing business, a growing number of law firms and legal employers are outsourcing legal work to freelancers to handle work overflow, bring in new expertise, and serve clients more cost-effectively. What Is a Freelancer? Freelancers are independent contractors who work from home or a remote drehort. The advent of the internet, smartphones, computer-based legal research databases, advanced telecommunication systems, and mobile technology has made it possible to work from a virtual office rather than at a traditional law firm. Freelancers go by many names such as consultant, solo professional, virtual employee, independent contractor, virtual professional, and self-employed profess ional. Legal freelancers are generally not tied to one employer. They serve a variety of clients across the globe, working on projects they choose with flexible hours. These remote employees represent a great value to the employer because law firms dont have to provide them with benefits or make room for them in the workspace. They dont have to provide office supplies or a secretary so much of the traditional overhead is eliminated. Freelancers help employers deal with work overflows or tight deadlines without hiring additional staff. They sometimes offer expertise not found within the firm. They can also perform local work on behalf of out-of-town firms, such as court appearances or filing papers with local courts, and this eliminates the firms need to send an associate to travel to those locations. Freelance Careers in the Legal Industry Many careers in the legal industry lend themselves to freelance work, including lawyers, paralegals, court reporters, legal secretaries, liti gation support personnel, legal nurse consultants, and even law students who arent yet working at a firm. Budget-conscious clients, mobile technology, globalization, and changing law firm business models have fueled the growth of legal outsourcing for a wide range of legal services. Advantages of Freelancing Working from home can be a dream come true for many legal professionals. Flexible schedules, better work-life balance, and greater autonomy are several of the top reasons to launch a freelance business. Disadvantages of Freelancing There are also drawbacks to self-employment, including some degree of isolation, variable workloads, unpredictable income, and lack of employer-paid benefits. Disadvantages for Law Firms Law is a highly confidential business, so using remote workers can pose a unique risk to firms. Clients confidential files and information must be emailed or otherwise forwarded to another location away from the office. That location may not be state-of-th e-art secure, and notall firms are willing to take on this risk. The good news is that if youre thinking of taking this route, the costs of maintaining a freelance workforce, at least in part, are often significantly lower than the costs for in-house employees. Learn More If youre interested in freelancing, the National Association of Freelance Legal Professionals can help. This association was created to assist freelancers in optimizing the financial and personal success of their businesses, as well as to raise the profile of freelancing as a career choice.

How your take-home pay compares to workers around the world

How yur take-home pay compares to workers around the worldHow your take-home pay compares to workers around the worldTax season has finally come and gone, and by now most Americans have either gotten their refund or established a payment plan for taxes owed to the government. Heres a nice thought experiment go back and look at your tax return to figure out how much money the government claims through all forms of taxation. How does your own situation compare to the rest of the world? The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) tracks both the average wage earnings and taxation figures for each of its 35-member countries. Gross earnings refer to the amount of money you get paid before anything gets taken out, like taxes, health insurance, and retirement contributions. The remainder is referred to as net earnings. We used these numbers to create a pie chart. The overall size of each slice refers to the level of gross earnings, and the green portion represents net i ncome after taxes. We illustrate the difference between these two figures with dark red referring to income tax rates, and pink referring to social security taxes. The result is a snapshot of how much workers actually take home across the OECD.Top 10 countries with the highest net wages1. Switzerland $58,864 after paying 16.9% in taxes2. Luxembourg $46,593 after paying 29.1% in taxes3. Iceland $45,390 after paying 28.7% in taxes4. Korea $44,892 after paying 14.5% in taxes5. Netherlands $43,835 after paying 30.4% in taxes6. Australia $41,655 after paying 24.4% in taxes7. United Kingdom $41,608 after paying 23.4% in taxes8. Japan $41,139 after paying 22.3% in taxes9. Norway $40,834 after paying 27.6% in taxes10. United States $39,211 after paying 26% in taxesOur chart reveals a few different dynamics in the OECD. First off, Switzerland stands out atop the rankings with $70,835 in gross and $58,864 in net take-home pay. The combination of high earnings with low taxation is hard to beat . Now take a look at South Korea. The country ranks way down in 14th place in terms of gross earnings ($52,505) but rises to 4th in terms of net earnings ($44,892). Thats entirely thanks to a relatively light tax regime of 14.5%, which is the third lowest rate in the OECD behind only Chile (7.0%) and Mexico (11.2%).At the other end of the spectrum, some countries have extraordinarily high taxation levels that take up significant chunks of workers paychecks. Belgium is the clear outlier in this regard with $58,545 in gross but only $34,834 in net take-home pay. This is thanks to an average total tax rate of 40.5%, pushing it below Ireland and France.Another interesting trend in our visualization is how many OECD countries are scrunched at the low end. Mexico, Latvia, and Chile are so small that the slices are almost difficult to distinguish. In fact, the average gross earnings across the entire OECD is only $43,792 with net earnings amounting to just $32,624. This means that American s are above average in terms of their earnings, but not dramatically so. The potential to make an obscene amount of wealth is likely higher in the U.S. than any other country, but not for most people. There are two important caveats to keep in mind. First, federal income taxes can be highly complex, and as much as 45% of taxpayers dont pay any federal income tax whatsoever. Second, despite all the focus on take-home pay, it is worth remembering that income taxes and social security taxes both eventually buy workers something- namely, everything that the government spends money on. Many people across the OECD take the long view that paying for social services through taxation makes a lot of sense for society. All that being said, more take-home pay on par with Switzerland wouldnt be too schwimmbad either. This post was originally published on HowMuch.net.

Educational Counselors

Educational Counselors 6 Resume Writing Tips for Career/Educational Counselors 6 Resume Writing Tips for Career/Educational Counselors Writing a perfect look resume can be considered as a kind of art, because there is not a correct way to formulate ones resume, but there are always resume building services  that can be found helpful when applying for an education and career counseling position. It is important to stand out from the crowd with your resume and that is done with quality content that is clearly written without any errors. Courtesy: www.atmanco.com When it comes to education resumes, they need to be filled with relevant content, edited and aesthetically pleasing. For a career counselor, it is all about finding a way to describe the connection you are able to establish with your clients and how you have done it in the past. Here are some points that every good resume regarding education and career counseling needs to have so that it would stand out when you are in search for a new job. Aesthetics It is important to have a professional and classic resume and this is connected to the type of font you choose, consistency, the amount of whitespace on your resume, its length and the overall appearance. Even the fact that education is an innovative and creative field shouldn’t have an influence on your resume. This means that there shouldn’t be any pictures, designs and colors on your CV. The people who will be looking at it can overlook you as a potential candidate if your resume does not satisfy the aesthetics or if it is not professional enough. Content Even though aesthetic mistakes in your resume can harm you and make you lose the race for that job position, quality content is the thing that will make your resume stand out even more. The most relevant thing should be the experiences you include, since that is the thing that matters the most to the people who will be looking at your resume. Stating what you have accomplished provides information about your relevant experience and, in the same time, it highlights your expertise. Education When writing a resume for this position, you need to include the institution, state and city where you have got your degree from. Your degrees should be written out in their full name. Include your GPA, especially if it is higher than 3.0, and include other pieces of information you might find relevant, like whether or not you have studied abroad, various academic awards and honors and, if you have attended some relevant courses, make sure to put that in as well. For a career counseling resume. also include the institution, state and city where you got your degree, along with its full name in singular for example, Master of Education. The same goes for GPA and your academic awards and honors. Experience Including experience in your resume is considered to be its heart, whether it is for education or career counseling and it can be represented in different ways. When putting down your experience in your educational or career counseling resume, you need to choose the richest, concrete and the most relevant experiences you had in teaching or career counseling. After every job you mention, you should write bullet points that are accomplishment statements of your detailed experience. Have in mind when listing your experience to write them in reverse chronological order. Contextualize everything by proving specific experiences, objectives and results. License In your good educational resume, you need to list professional educator licenses and endorsements you have received in your area of expertise, as well as grade levels whether they were Early Childhood or Special Education. If you have gotten any middle grade endorsements, also include them on your resume. For career counseling resumes, know the licensing requirements for the place you are applying for, because every state has different criteria. You should include the name of your license in your resume, the state and city where you have received it and the date when you have obtained it. Editing Editing is a component which is essential and it is often overlooked. Editing enables you and others to be sure that the content in the resume and its aesthetics are accurate and clear. Give it to as many people as you can to proofread it. These are the things you need to pay attention to when editing your resume. ? Length â€" Resumes that are written by educators and career counselors should be one page long. If you find it difficult to narrow it down, remove all the elements that are maybe not so related to your field of expertise. If you are a seasoned professional in education and career counseling, you resume can be a tad longer. ? Font â€" Use a font that is professional and easy to read, like Times New Roman or Arial, and the size should be 10-12 points. ? Accuracy â€" The resume has to be 100% error free, so carefully read through it and check the grammar, punctuation and spelling. ? Consistency â€" Your resume formatting needs to be consistent. If you “bold” a job title, you need to bold every next job title, and make sure that everything is neatly lined up. These are our six resume writing tips for educational and career counselors that will help you write the best professional resume there is. Remember that the best resumes need to describe your work experience regarding quality and the connections you have established, rather than efficiency and volume. So, when having all of this in mind when writing your resume for education and career counseling, it is guaranteed that your resume will be better than other resumes and you will most certainly impress the people who will be looking at it.

Traits of the Most Successful Recruiters

Traits of the Most Successful Recruiters Traits of the Most Successful Recruiters Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned pro, professional recruiters are always hungry for best practices and input from other successful recruiters. In today’s article, we asked outstanding recruiters to weigh in on what makes them so successful. These are the five characteristics every recruiter needs to have in order to be the best they can be: Tenacious “Tenacity + domain expertise + empathy + obsessive attention to detail” Ashley Doyal, @Ashley_Doyal Ashley Doyal, co-founder of the RecruitHer recruiting firm, cites tenacity as the first trait of successful recruiters. Recruiters who are tenaciously committed to what they do take the time to build true domain expertise and devote attention to all of the details that come with a position. Transparent “Be open, transparent, and authentic with your candidates. Tell them what they need to know.” Charlie Judy, @HRFishbowl Charlie Judy, founding partner of WorkXO emphasizes the role of transparency in recruiting as a building block of success. Recruiters connect people with jobs, and they also give people an experience. To give candidates and hiring managers a positive experience that inspires trust, recruiters need to make the recruiting process an authentic and connective one. In the Know “Understand industry trends + master sourcing + utilize your connections!” Stacy Williamson, @RecruiterStacy Stacy Williamson, Tech Recruiter for ESPN, focuses on being in the know about a specific industry. When you’re focused on one recruiting environment, you can really get to know the industry trends, understand the best places to source candidates and make the most of your connections. Committed “Recruiters should always put the candidates goals (or successes) before their own.” Matrix Resources, @MATRIXResources Matrix Resources, a technology staffing and solutions company, puts the focus on commitment. Placing candidates isn’t a one-way street for the recruiter’s benefit. Instead, it’s important to be committed to the candidate’s goals and successes. Relationship Builder “The best recruiters bring to the table a combination of coach, counselor, sales leaders, and match-maker.” Christy Robb, @Christy_Robb Christy Robb, principal of Christy Robb Career Lifestyle, says that recruiting is all about relationships. While recruiters and prospective candidates are both motivated by financial factors, the value of the connection is about relationships, trust and listening. Now it’s time to feature your thoughts: Do you agree with these five traits? Or do you have another trait to add to the list? Survey 54% of Americans would choose lower taxes over happiness

Survey 54% of Americans would choose lower taxes over happiness Survey 54% of Americans would choose lower taxes over happiness It may come as a surprise that set against a global backdrop, Americans are not all that happy. But according to the 2018 World Happiness Report, a ranking of 156 countries based on their happiness levels by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the United States lags far behind many of our peers in terms of the measurements that indicate wellbeing. These “key variables” include “income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust, and generosity,” according to the report. The U.S. ranks behind Costa Rica, Israel, Iceland, Australia, and Canada, among others, to claim the 18th spot on the list. The country with the highest happiness ranking from 2015-2017 is Finland, and the country that ranks lowest is Burundi.Among the nations that beat out the United States for top spots, there is at least one major commonality. Eighty-two percent of them have higher income taxes, according to law firm Lexington Law.But, when choosing between happiness and lower taxe s, it seems most Americans still settle on the latter.Lexington Law surveyed at least 1,000 people per question to gauge how willing the American people are to pay more taxes if it would mean a better life. The poll indicated that 54% of people would not pay more in taxes, “even if it would improve their happiness.”By political issue, the numbers become even more dramatic. Seventy-five percent of people said they would not pay higher taxes for universal healthcare, which aligns with other polling. Despite the fact that a majority of Americans like Medicare-for-All in theory, their interest cools when they realize the program would mean more cuts to their paycheck.Similarly, only 11% of Americans are willing to pay more to the government for national paid parental leave. “Men are 63% less likely to be in favor of paying higher taxes for parental leave,” according to Lexington Law, while people of childbearing age, no matter their gender, are three times more likely to go for it.Similar to healthcare, when Americans see the cost of paid parental leave, they become far less eager to implement the policy. These results may be confusing - why, if we support an idea, are we unwilling to see it through? But attaching the price tag to a concept brings home the political reality, and Americans seem indisposed to implement the kinds of practices that make countries such as Finland, Norway, and Denmark so well-regarded in terms of quality of life.

Companies That Offer Tuition Reimbursement Programs

Companies That Offer Tuition Reimbursement Programs Companies That Offer Tuition Reimbursement Programs When youre looking for a job, the biggest number to consider is your hourly wages or annual salary. But the  benefits a company offers, from health insurance to tuition reimbursement, can also make a big difference to your monthly bills and are worth  factoring into your job decision. Many companies offer tuition reimbursement as part of their  benefits package. Heres how it typically works: an employee pays upfront for college, graduate, or continuing education classes, and once the class or semester is complete, the employee pays back a portion of money spent- or the full amount. Why Do Employers Offer Tuition Reimbursement?   There are several incentives for companies to offer this perk. Like any benefit, it helps attract and retain the best employees. Relevant coursework can sharpen workers skills and know-how, strengthening the company. Tuition reimbursement is tax deductible up to $5,250 per employee per year, making this program cost-effective for companies.   How Tuition Reimbursement Programs Work Implementation of this program varies significantly from company to company: Some reimburse for any educational classes, some require that coursework is done through specific schools to be eligible for reimbursement, and others only cover tuition costs for approved classes. Companies may require a certain grade to qualify for reimbursement, or that employees remain with the company for a set period of time following the completion of the class to qualify for reimbursement. Some companies may cover the costs associated with classes, such as textbooks or internet connection fees. Companies Offering Tuition Reimbursement as a Benefit From fast food chains to telecommunications companies to banks, these are some of the top companies that pay workers education costs. ATTAs part of its benefits package,  ATT offers tuition assistance  - employees must meet certain eligibility requirements to get the reimbursement, and the costs must be approved by the company. Anthem, Inc.Employees at this health benefits company are eligible for up to $5,000 a year in reimbursement for tuition and textbooks. BPAt this oil giant, there are many requirements for eligibility, but tuition reimbursement is a generous 90 percent of the costs of tuition, fees, and books. Among other requirements, employees must get approval for the classes in advance of registration and receive a passing grade. Bank of AmericaEmployees can get up to $5,250 in job-related courses or degree programs covered each year. ChipotleBoth hourly and salaried employees at this fast-food chain are eligible for tuition reimbursement. To offer this benefit, Chipotle partnered with Guild Education, which offers online classes, programs, and degrees from a variety of universities. Employees can work toward degrees (undergrad or graduate), take classes, earn a GED, or study ESL, eligible for up to $5,250 annually. Home DepotTuition reimbursement rates for  Home Depot employees  vary by role- salaried employees can get up $5,000 annually, while full-time hourly employees are reimbursed up to $3,000, and part-time hourly employees can get up to $1,500 back. JetBlueThe airline runs a program known as JetBlue Scholars- employees can apply to enroll, and once accepted, take approved online courses. To be eligible, employees must have worked at JetBlue for two years, and have prior college credits in place. Proctor GambleUp to 80% of tuition and fees are reimbursed at PG, makers of a vast range of consumer and household goods. Employees must get programs and fees pre-approved, and there is a cap of $40,000 of reimbursed expenses. SmuckersThe J.M. Smuckers company makes more than jam- its brands include big names like Folgers, Pillsbury, and Meow Mix. The company offers up to 100 percent reimbursement for tuition costs for company-approved college courses. StarbucksAll benefits-eligible United States employees of this coffee purveyor can have their full-time college tuition covered, essentially a free bachelors degree. One important note on this program: Employees can only study at Arizona State Universitys online program. UPSPart-time UPS employees who work in package handling can participate in the companys Earn and Learn Program, covering up to $25,000 in college expenses (each year, the program reimburses a maximum of $5,250 per employee).  According to the company website, employees are eligible for this perk from their start  date. (Other education assistance programs are available for employees in different roles.) Wells FargoThe banking giant offers up to $5,000 in annual (and eligible) tuition expenses. VerizonAll employees at  Verizon, the telecommunications giant, are eligible for up to $8,000 in tuition reimbursement each year. Verizons program requires that classes be related to the business. Key Takeaways CONSIDER MORE THAN TAKE-HOME PAY: When reviewing job offers, keep the entire package, including benefits, in mind.  MANY COMPANIES OFFER TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: If you work for a small or newly launched company, check with your HR department to see if theyll consider adding this perk.  COVERAGE VARIES:  Not all tuition reimbursement plans  are the same- check the details to see how much is covered, eligibility requirements, and reimbursement limits.

Heres Scientific Proof You Can Create Your Own Luck

Heres Scientific Proof You Can Create Your Own Luck Heres Scientific Proof You Can Create Your Own Luck Conventional wisdom states that luck is a matter of chance, similar to rolling a pair of dice. Maybe someone you know seems to snatch up the best job opportunities, your friend stumbled upon a great idea, or an acquaintance manages to maintain a happy relationship. But what is it that makes some people luckier than others? Richard Wiseman, a British psychology professor at the University of Hartfordshire, has been studying how luck plays a role in our lives. He wanted to see how chance opportunities come about and their impact on people’s lives. He began by examining the difference between self-professed lucky and unlucky people. Wiseman found that lucky people score significantly higher on extroversion. They smile twice as often and engage in more eye contact. Their sociability, Wiseman explains, helps them increase their likelihood of a lucky opportunity because they meet more people, connect better, and maintain relationships. Unlucky people, on the other hand, scored twice as high on neuroticism. To see how anxiety affected people, subjects were asked to watch a moving dot in the center of a computer screen, as large dots unexpectedly flashed at the edges of the screen. Almost all participants noticed these dots. To increase anxiousness, the experiment was repeated with another group, who were offered a financial award to focus on the center dot. More than a third missed the large dots on the edge of the screen that popped up. While anxiety helps us focus on a task, it also blinds us to other opportunities. As a result, unlucky people miss out on prospects because they’re too busy worrying about one thing. They develop tunnel vision in their career, missing viable job opportunities. Or, they might talk to a few select people at a social gathering, and then lose out on meeting other interesting people. Lucky people, on the other hand, are open to new experiences. They’re more willing to talk to new people, travel to new places, and try new things. A Lucky Attitude Toward Life Wiseman conducted another experiment. This time, he gave people a newspaper and asked them to count the number of photographs inside. Unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs. Lucky people took seconds. On the second page, there was a large message that read: “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper.” Unlucky people tended to miss the message, while lucky people spotted it right away. The self-professed lucky people were simply more observant. Lucky people are also optimistic. They have positive expectations, which lead to self-fulfilling prophecies. Even if things take a turn for the worse, they can spot the good in a situation. Unlucky people might see the same situation and only point out the negatives. Not only do positive expectations help people become happier, but they can also help make the most of difficult situations. How to Increase Your Luck To see if unlucky people could turn their luck around, Wiseman enrolled his participants in his “luck school,” where he put people through a series of exercises to increase their luck. The results were astonishing. After one month of enrollment, 80% of people reported themselves as happier, more satisfied with their lives, and most importantly, luckier. The lucky ones became luckier, and the unlucky turned lucky. They had been taught how to spot good opportunities, have a positive outlook, and to make better decisions. To increase your luck, you can practice what the “luck school” participants did: Keep an open mind (and pair of eyes): Worrying about obtaining a goal endlessly can unknowingly close you off to other possibilities. Having an open attitude and looking around for new opportunities can open you up to lucky chances. Look on the positive side: Focusing only on the negatives dampens your spirits and future expectations. When you go from complaining about scraping your knee to being grateful that it wasn’t any worse, it becomes easier to try new things. Do something out of the ordinary this week: Routines can lead to ruts, whether it’s talking to the same people, eating the same food, or doing the same type of work. Stepping outside your boundary increases the likelihood of a lucky break. Many often attribute other people’s fortunes to good luck, while their own misfortunes are the result of bad luck. It’s true that some people are born with advantages, or events happen to us that are outside our control. You can always do something to build upon what you have. When you open yourself to new places, practice gratitude, and step outside your routine, you might find yourself getting lucky. This article was originally published on Inc.
